Klaas Jan Huntelaar
FC Twente was eliminated in the eighth finals of the Europa League. After the 1-0 home win over Schalke 04, the Tukkers saw a 1-0 lead turned into a 4-1 defeat in the return. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored three times.
The first opportunity was for Schalke; Nikolaj Mikhailov made a good save from a shot by Jermaine Jones. But then Twente, which had started the game without Peter Wisgerhof, Leroy Fer and Ola John, took control. That quickly led to Willem Janssen's 0-1, who completed a nice attack via Nacer Chadli, Luuk de Jong and Chadli again.
In the remainder, Twente dominated, until it suddenly became 1-1. Julian Draxler crossed, Twente 'forgot' Huntelaar and the striker, who had recently received a yellow card for a foul, headed free for Michailov to score easily.
Twente promptly lost the initiative. Huntelaar and Joel Matip, who hit the crossbar with a header, were close to making it 2-1, but Twente reached halftime without further damage.
Immediately after the break, Twente faltered again; Draxler tested Mikhailov's fists and Raúl headed just over. Moments later it was scored: Janssen got the ball in the hand with a volley from Raúl and Huntelaar shot the awarded penalty high against the ropes.
Twente could hardly escape the German pressure and after seventy minutes the score became 3-1; Jones spun free and shot between Janssen's legs. In the final phase, Huntelaar first missed an opportunity and then scored his third from a counter.
